From A1 to Alltag (Everyday Life)
2017
Landing in Berlin
Arrived with basic A1 German after school + 1 yr. Struggled with hostel bookings, faced Airbnb, and wg-gesucht challenges with elderly German hosts. Tackled the maze of language-course visas while searching for legitimate job/university.
2018
Hardcore Student Life
Battled student dorm waiting lists, experienced racism and bureaucratic nightmares. Dealt with unexpected fines, mandatory radio taxes, and improved to B2.1 German. Started B.Sc. Biotechnology studies while working at McDonald's to support myself.
2019
Academic Growth
Managed visa extensions and financial needs. Volunteered in iGEM research, attended conference in Boston (USA), reached B2.2 German, and secured Bachelor's internship at DZNE. Gained diverse exposure through friendships, student job, and volunteering experiences. Mastered apartment hunting via Facebook and university noticeboards and moved into a WG.
2021
Pandemic Survival
COVID disrupted everything—labs closed, internship vanished, exams went remote and motivation too. Faced a family emergency requiring travel to India, lost my job, had to sublet my apartment within 4 days. Pivoted to work at a PCR test center while continuing studies online for 6 months, including reaching C1 level in German.
2022
Career Transition
Started studies in healthcare, after Bachelor's degree, and supported my brother's education in Portugal. Continued supporting iGEM Community and working part-time in retail while figuring out the Agentur für Arbeit system. Became fluent in German while commuting daily between Bonn and Düsseldorf, experiencing all the DB train issues firsthand.
2024
Full Integration
Started professional work at Diakonie, moved to an unfurnished studio apartment, specialised in healthcare with focus on Degenerative diseases. German integration reached its peak—working with elderly patients who shares World War stories, and navigated every aspect of German society in depth.
